What’s Urban Shield?

Urban Shield is “a comprehensive, full scale regional preparedness exercise assessing the San Francisco Bay Area’s ability to respond to natural disasters, technological, and terrorism incidents.” First responders of all stripes (fire departments, police, medical providers, para-military, etc.) and from many locations participate in a variety of reality-based scenarios, from team rescue of a parachuter stuck on the side of a multi-story building (last year in San Jose) to terrorist attacks, ferry and water-based disasters, mass-scale earthquake response, and more. The full event takes place over several days and includes a lot of different activities. Here’s the highlight reel from 2011 for a better idea.
